Alcohol has been increasingly penetrated the social lives of young women. Beverages containing alcohol are increasingly being expressed in eating meals or while hanging out with friends on the weekends. There are just a drink, but not a few who make a habit of drinking alcohol.
Women who frequently drink alcohol to excess, even get drunk early in pregnancy increases the risk to give birth to infants with oral cleft or slit in the oral cavity. This fact was revealed by researchers from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, USA.
Oral cleft of the most common is cleft lip and cleft palate. Cleft lip is a condition that causes the upper lip between the mouth and nose slotted, so that seems like a separate lip. Cleft palate occurs when the palate is perfectly united on fetal growth and development in the womb. The severity of the condition of cleft palate varies, ranging from the separation that occurs only in the back of the soft palate, until almost the entire roof of the mouth open.
The scientists from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences conducts research on population in Norway, which is one of the populations with the highest incidence rate of cleft palate in Europe. The study included all children born with cleft defects over a period of 5 years. Subjects of the study amounted to 573 mothers who gave birth to babies with cleft loops with or without cleft palate, and the mothers who were randomly selected from across country. The mothers filled out questionnaires which focused on the mother's lifestyle and environment for 3 months of pregnancy. In the face of developments that are happening in the fetus.
From the study revealed that mothers who drink alcohol drunk by an average of 5 cups to drink during the first trimester are in greater risk for having a baby with an oral cleft compared with mothers who are not drinkers. More and more, and often mothers consume alcohol, the greater this risk.
Cleft lip and cleft palate are not only disturb the appearance of the face which can lower self-confidence when the children were grown, but also cause the baby to suck milk difficult because the movement involves sucking the lip movement. Cleft palate also cause the child to talk is difficult because the pronunciation of the letters requires cooperation between all parts of the oral cavity such as the lips, palate, teeth and tongue
